I’m Tamiko,
Mom of None, Childfree by Choice and a proud DINK!
DINKs and SINKs are double (or dual) income and single income individuals with no kids. Since I’m married, I represent the DINKs.
When did I know I didn’t want kids? I don’t think I can pinpoint the exact time but it was a gradual choice. When I was a kid, like most girls, I played with dolls and wanted to be a mommy. As I got older, I began to see the strain that parenthood was having on my friends and family and decided that wasn’t for me. I also saw many people who didn’t have kids lead fabulous lives, traveling to exotic places on a whim, never having to worry about arranging childcare. That was the life I wanted to live. When I met my husband, he like most people felt the next step after marriage was kids. When he saw how having kids could disrupt his obligations and schedule he agreed we would have a childfree marriage.
Now, the backlash. When people find out we don’t want kids, it’s like we said we have the plague. The rude, negative comments have been plentiful. I’ve been able to combat this with snarky comments but I don’t understand why my choice not to have kids is different from their choice to have kids. Why are people so offended when you don’t live the life they want you to?
That’s why I created this podcast. To give people who are considering or have made the choice not to have kids a space to be celebrated. I am your biggest cheerleader! We won’t let the moms and dads of the world dim our shine.
