Vivica A. Fox Goes Viral about Not Having Kids
Last month, Vivica A Fox went viral in a TikTok clip discussing why she hasn’t joined the Mommy Mafia. While speaking at an event, Vivica was asked about the possibility of adopting since she doesn’t have any children of her own. In true Vivica A. Fox fashion, she shut the conversation down. She said just because she hasn’t birthed any children doesn’t mean she doesn’t have any. She has six godchildren. She made a point to say she loves kids, this always soothes the Mommy Mafia whether it’s true or not. For Vivica, it’s true, for me y’all know it’s not, generally speaking.
She was on an episode of The Real talk show and the video came up in their discussion. Host Garcelle Beauvais asked her about the viral clip and why women feel pressured to have children. Vivica said it is an old way of thinking, that women have to choose between kids and career, because now you can have it all. Well I disagree, this isn't an old way of thinking, it’s still a today way of thinking. If it was an old way of thinking, women wouldn’t constantly be asked why they don’t have children like she was at this event. She is proudly 57 years old, yet even though she’s past childbearing age, she is asked if she would consider adopting. Because if missed your chance to have your own own kids the traditional way, you can always adopt to create the life many think you’re missing.

She did say she considered having children with a former fiancé, but her family stepped in and discouraged her from going forward with that marriage. She mentioned regretting not being able to see her own eyes in a child. Host Adrienne Houghton clutched her chest and gave a look of such pity and asked if that made Vivica emotional. Host Loni Love, who also doesn’t have any children, said she regretted not being able to see herself in a child. I will say Vivica played to the room like the great actress she is. She soothed the looks of pity and possibly shame from the hosts by sounding crestfallen while saying she regretted it. Maybe she does, maybe she doesn’t, at least the hosts felt better now.
When you look at articles about this viral clip, Vivica “comes clean” about her “life choices” and is “opening up about her motherhood journey” when “quizzed about having kids”. These dog whistle terms are loud and clear to those of us who have chosen to be childfree. Remember, having children is a choice that no one questions, but when you choose not to have kids, others quiz you about your “regret” or feel the need to make you “come clean” about your motherhood journey or lack thereof. Maybe we all should quiz our friends with kids to come clean about their life choices and if they have any regrets about having children. Be ready for those pearl clutching reactions.
Vivica says she is a great Godmother and her godchildren love her immensely! Me on the other hand, am a terrible godparent, you can ask them and their parents.
